Nutritionist Gillian McKeith prepared a meal of kangaroo fillet, having appointed herself camp chef, but the TV star was already beginning to wind up fellow contestants with her bossiness and insect phobia.
She panicked on finding a spider in her bed, prompting veteran actress Britt Ekland to say ''Gillian is acting like a child. A child with too much sugar.''
McKeith spent the evening in tears, complaining that the jungle was a ''hell hole''.
''I'm finding it very hard,'' she said. ''I have a serious phobia to the point I could faint if I see a spider. I feel like I'm having a heart attack.''
Meanwhile, in Camp Bruce, the boys were left with nothing but boots, torches and a map to find their way to a makeshift camp for the night.
Ex-MP Lembit Opik claimed he was enjoying the experience while former Coronation Street actor Nigel Havers, ever the gentleman, said he would have swapped places with the girls had the boys won the trial.
On waking up the following morning, Havers said he wanted to ''kill someone for this - and Ant and Dec are first on the list''.
A skydive into the jungle was next on the agenda for four of the 10 celebrities, with Olympic gold medal sprinter Linford Christie going first.
X Factor finalist Stacey Solomon said she felt like ''the luckiest girl in the world'' after her jump, while Kayla Collins - the US Playboy model - felt sick and had to lie down to recover.
Tensions rose during the next challenge, when six of the contestants had to canoe into the jungle and a row between Havers and Opik ended with Havers falling into the water.
The actor spluttered: ''I'm going to annihilate him and I think some people will be very pleased.''
The celebrities were finally shown their separate camps in the jungle, with the girls' sleeping area decorated in pink and Camp Bruce in blue.
As they settled into their home for the next few weeks, the girls refused to try out the jungle shower and complained about feeling grubby before bed.
Bond girl Ekland said: ''I feel extremely grubby. I don't have any knickers or a clean bra. I haven't gone two days in the same pair of nick nicks since I was a teenager.''
The boys spent the night teasing Opik, who fended off jokes from fellow contestants about his former girlfriend, Cheeky Girl Gabriela Irimia.
Christie said: ''If you can get a cheeky girl and you become a cheeky boy, it's all good. Could you tell the difference between them?''
