The X Factor Svengali told how he had been there for his fellow judge as her three-and-a-half year marriage has fallen into crisis.

Speaking to the Daily Mail at Sir Elton John’s post-Oscar party in Los Angeles, Mr Cowell said: ‘She's a friend and you're always going to be there for friends.'

Cowell, 50, went on: 'She's going through a hard time, but you know, she's a strong girl. I've been in touch and I'm there for her.'

When asked if he believed the pop star and shamed Chelsea and England footballer Cole would split, he replied: 'You've got to do what feels right for you.’

Cowell was not the only celebrity to offer support to Mrs Cole at the star-studded party.

Victoria Beckham, who became friends with Mrs Cole during the World Cup of 2006, also offered encouragement.

She said: ‘I support Cheryl 100 per cent. I have not spoken to her, but I'm always there for her. I'm behind her - I feel for anyone going through a tough time.

The kindly words for Mrs Cole come just hours before she is due to come face-to-face with her estranged husband for the first time since she announced they were separating on February 23.

Since then, philanderer Cole has been at a sports rehabilitation centre in Capbreton, South West France.

But he returns to England today for make-or-break talks with Mrs Cole at their nine-bedroomed mansion in Hurtmore, Surrey.

Friends have said how Cole, 29, has been optimistic the pair will be reconciled.

But Mrs Cole’s brother Andrew Tweedy - also 29 - yesterday insisted that, this time, Mrs Cole will not forgive Cole.

He said: ‘They are going to divorce and there is no two ways about it. I believe the house is going up for sale and she is going to get it sold as soon as possible and move on with her life.’

Mrs Cole has spoken to her husband during his stay in France and he has bombarded her with texts.

But Mr Tweedy remained insistent his sister will not relent.

He said: ‘As far as I’m aware they are talking about the practicalities of the divorce. There is no way back for Ashley.’ ( dailymail.co.uk )
