Julia Roberts: I'm a Hindu - Julia Roberts, the Hollywood actress, has disclosed that she is a practising Hindu who goes to temple to “chant and pray and celebrate”.
The 42-year-old, who married the cameraman Daniel Moder in 2002, said the couple worship at temple together regularly with their three children.
She added that she hopes to be reincarnated as “something quiet” after the stresses of celebrity.
Roberts, who was born to Baptist and Catholic parents, is thought to have made the religious conversion while shooting her new film, Eat, Pray, Love, in which she plays a woman hoping to find herself through Hindu spirituality.
The actress caused controversy in India last September when local Hindus were barred from celebrating an important religious festival while she shot scenes for the film in their temple on the outskirts of New Delhi.
Villagers hoping to mark the beginning of Navratri, nine days of worship of their Goddess Durga, at Ashram Hari Mandir found their temple sealed by Roberts's vast security team of 350 guards, bulletproof cars and a helicopter.
The actress disclosed her conversion in an interview with the September issue of Elle magazine, in which she also railed against the use of cosmetic surgery.
“It's unfortunate that we live in such a panicked, dysmorphic society where women don't even give themselves a chance to see what they'll look like as older persons. I want to have some idea of what I'll look like before I start cleaning the slates," she said.
