Spider-man musical delayed for fifth time

Spider-man musical delayed for fifth time - £42million Broadway show is beset by problems - The New York theatre production of Spider-man has delayed its opening for the fifth time.

Producers have been forced to set a new opening night of 15th March, the musical’s lead producers announced late last night.

Spider-man: Turn Off The Dark, the most expensive production on Broadway ever - costing around £42million - has been beset by problems.

Spider-man rehearsals have led to four serious injuries and the lead actress, Natalie Mendoza, quitting – the further delays will push the cost of the show even higher.

In a statement, the producers, Michael Cohl and Jeremiah J. Harris, said the opening was pushed back “to allow for more time to fine-tune aspects of the show, including the new ending.”

The musical was conceived by Tony Award-winning director and co-writer Julie Taymor and U2's Bono and The Edge, who wrote the music. It has been more than eight years in the making.

Cohl said that the preview schedule allowed for only 12 hours a week for technical rehearsals and that the show was “10 times more complicated to tech than anything else.”

“We simply need more time to fully execute the creative team’s vision before freezing the show,” he said. “I picked a date in March that allows me to ensure that this will be the final postponement.”

Along with the delayed opening, the preview performances on Jan. 18 and Jan. 25 have been canceled.

The most serious accident involved cast member Christopher Tierney, who plunged more than 20 feet into the orchestra pit when a safety rope snapped.

The performance - in the week before Christmas - was brought to a halt and prompted an immediate safety review.

Tierney, who recently left hospital, described his experience as "very upsetting".

In another setback, lead actress Mendoza suffered a concussion after being hit by a weighted rope on the first night of previews.

The 32-year-old has since pulled out of the show. "It has been a difficult decision to make but I regret that I am unable to continue," she said in a statement. ( telegraph.co.uk )
