Despite decades of controversy surrounding Camilla Duchess of Cornwall, Prince William's stepmother is emerging as a role model for his future wife, Kate Middleton.
Most people remember Camilla as the woman who broke up the marriage of Diana Princess of Wales. In a 1995 interview with Martin Bashir, Diana famously said, "There were three in the marriage." Two years later, Diana's tragic death only heightened public opinion against Camilla.
Is Camilla Kate Middleton's New Best Friend?
Despite her notoriety, Camilla maintained a relatively low profile throughout her relationship with Prince Charles. She kept quiet in public, did not appear with him in front of photographers and did not answer media questions. At the same time, she continued to build a private relationship with him, supporting both him and his sons. By the time, she married her prince in 2005, they had been a couple for many, many years.
In fact, Diana's youngest son, Prince Harry, declared that he and his brother love Camilla . "To be honest with you," he said, "she's always been very close to me and William."
Kate Middleton and Prince William also forged a private relationship away from the public's gaze over several years. During that time, they were rarely photographed together and Kate usually just smiled pleasantly as the media relentlessly pursued her.
Since Kate and William announced their engagement last October, the relationship between the new royal bride and her future stepmother-in-law has been very friendly. They've been seen laughing together over lunch in a trendy in a trendy restaurant and enjoying an evening at the Royal Ballet . In late March, Camilla publicly called Kate a "lovely girl" and said the family was lucky to have her.
So, it appears that Kate is being warmly welcomed by William's family. In fact, Camilla's sincere warmth could serve as a model for Kate in her royal role. Camilla has assumed a consort's role by supporting her royal spouse without seeking the spotlight. Even her decision to be known as the Duchess of Cornwall, one of her husband's lesser titles, reflects her sensitivity to the public's adoration for the last Princess of Wales as well as her willingness to stay in the background.
Reports of Camilla's public appearances regularly comment on her jolly attitude even when things go wrong as demonstrated when her car was attacked by demonstrators in December 2010. Photos of the incident show a startled Camilla, but by the time she arrived at her appointment, she laughed it off, saying, "There's a first time for everything."
If Camilla can maintain her composure after years of continuous criticism, Kate may do well to pay attention to her example. Besides, any bride certainly benefits from having her mother-in-law on her side. ( news.yahoo.com )
