The actor was presented with a certificate celebrating his Irish ancestry during a trip to Dublin for the premiere of his new film, Oblivion.

It has been revealed one of his forefathers helped stricken farmers in the nineteenth century, and prior to that, his bloodline can be traced back to days of knights in shining armor.

The research was commissioned by Tourism Ireland on behalf of The Gathering - an initiative to attract the Irish diaspora to visit Ireland through 2013.

Tom's Irish heritage was honoured with a reception hosted by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Tourism Ireland.

Tanaiste and Foreign Affairs Minister Eamon Gilmore presented the star with a framed certificate, which Tom looked delighted to receive.

Tom is in Dublin for the premiere of his latest blockbuster, Oblivion, at the Savoy cinema.

He also has engagements with the Irish Film Board, an appearance on the Late Late Show and a visit to the Guinness brewery on his agenda.

The day's plans will no doubt be made even more enjoyable by Tom's discovery that his Irish roots can be traced back for 800 years.

The findings reveal that the 50-year old actor's ancestry includes knights, rebels and 'hero landlord' Patrick Russell Cruise.

Tom was told that his great-great-great grandfather returned from America to Ireland after his land agent forced families from farms in Co Westmeath in 1843.

Upon his return he restored tenants to 500 acres around Paristown and Dardistown in the years before the Great Famine when potato crops repeatedly failed.

Tom has been mobbed by star struck fans since his arrival to the Emerald Isle on Tuesday.

The Top Gun star graciously signed autographs for an excited crowd who had stood in the cold waiting for him as he arrived at the Merrion Hotel in Dublin.

He made sure to flash a glimpse of his trademark smile as he chatted to fans who had been waiting for him in the bitter cold.

Despite the fact that it was nighttime, the superstar shielded his eye with sunglasses, no doubt in an attempt to go incognito.

And Monday afternoon was no different as Tom Cruise was greeted warmly by his fans in Moscow, Russia.

The global superstar may not have been a native of the country, but he was still welcomed like a prodigal son.

The All You Need Is Kill actor was sharp in a three piece suit which he teamed with a blue tie and white shirt.

Tom's dark grey pinstripe suit was partially covered by a thick black jacket as he braved the wet weather to take pictures with fans.

Miss Kurylenko, 33, may not have been as popular as Tom was, but she certainly stole the show with her amazing looks and sublime style.

The actress wore a sheer lace dress in baby blue which she teamed with a pair of simple pearl earrings.

Cruise and Kurylenko have spent a lot of time together promoting the movie and yet they are still not bored of each others company.

The stars seemed to be getting on like a house on fire at a photocall on Monday morning, spending the whole event chatting and giggling together.

The 33-year-old actress seemed to be in her element at the premiere, held in the country she was born in.

The To The Wonder star looked elegant and timeless in a deep red shift dress, which had flared sleeves and embroidered embellishment.

She gave herself some added height with a pair of modest black heels, matched with sheer tights, and wore her dark hair tied half up at the back of her head.

In the film, which is set in 2073, Tom Cruise plays 37-year-old former Marine Commander Jack Harper - one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth, which was nearly destroyed by an alien invasion 60 years earlier.

As part of a massive operation to extract the planet's remaining vital resources, he lives in an airborne 'town' floating thousands of meters above the Earth.
